At the end of 2017, EMSA, in a unique collaboration with IEC SC 22G WG18, has launched a three-year Round Robin program for converter losses (RR’C). The report of RR’C phase 1 is now available.

The report includes the new testing method for converters (Uniform Testing Protocol) and the results of 58 tests of 9 standard converters between 0.75 kW and up to 11 kW in 4 independent laboratories in Australia (CalTest), Denmark (DTI), USA (Advanced Energy) and Switzerland (BFH).

The results show a high repeatability of the results and confirm that the reference losses in the IEC 61800-9-2 for full, partial load and in standby are considerably higher than in standard market products today.

In the second phase of RR’C, from 2019 to the end of 2020, a set of some 60 converters from 0.12 kW up to 1000 kW will be tested in 7 international laboratories in order to inform the revision of IEC 61800-9-2. Laboratories in China, Japan and Germany have also agreed to participate. Also, more complex configurations of converters will be included in the testing sample.
